Fresh out of the door, it seemed as if the artist Musiq Soulchild immediately developed a devoted fan base after the video of his first hit, "Just Friends", "was presented simply singing, " I just want to know your name. "The single from her 2000 debut album "Aijuswanaseing " would usher in a refreshing departure from the boldest 'love songs of the day, while the women ' s collectively melt hearts everywhere.

Â

Today, the Philadelphia native has gone from neo-soul star shoots the intrepid musician, broadening their musical horizons, or as he says, expanding the audience 's perception of him and his music. "It 's only music way too much to stay in one genre, especially when they are inspired by many, many styles, "he said. " I like have everything as far as possible. "

Â

Urban Influence Magazine spoke to four times Grammy-nominated star of the soul of his more recent work, "on my radio, " by this December, and got to open about his past and the state of black music.

Â

UIM: Your new single "Radio " is everywhere, but it 'sa new sound for you. Why the change?

Â

Musiq Soulchild: I just wanted to do something different. I was listening to a lot of different things, so I wanted to introduce these ideas to my audience and let them know it is for me more than you 've been exposed.

Â

What have you been doing since the last album?

Â

I 've basically been working this album, and I have been working on a tour that I'm a point putting in November.

Â

You have an interesting background: eldest of nine children and high school dropouts. What do you say to Fans who look and think Don 't need an education to succeed?

Â

The reason I am successful is because I never let my barriers or obstacles faced to maintain the way I had to come. So the decisions I made were not 't necessarily the right decisions, however, despite these decisions, I did my best to be successful. I 't suggest that anyone follow the same path traveled because 'S very, very difficult especially when there is a better way to get exactly what I've achieved, if not more. Just go about it in a more efficient, such as staying in school and the pursuit of good education. I had to learn virtually everything the hard way. I hope that what I have been through the will of inspire others who want to achieve the same goals that I managed to just go about it in a more intelligent way than me.

Â

In your opinion, what is the power of music education?

Â

I think the power of music education helps to develop better thinking skills. A lot of people like regarding music and music education as something trivial, that 's not a necessity, but it really is, since use different parts of your thinking process. It 's not just music, something that requires the use creative thinking (help) to reach conclusions, to make decisions themselves during the creative process. We are naturally creative people, especially in the African American community. We 're naturally experimental. We 're naturally inspired.

Â

Being in the spotlight, do you feel pressure to be socially responsible your audience?

Â

I do not recognize the fact that I am a celebrity, the fact that I'm in the spotlight, I have a direct effect on people I see who inspire me, who enjoy my music, I entertain. So in that sense, we assume some responsibility. I Don 't think that ' s just that people automatically assume that the artist or the celebrity is automatically think of the affect they have on people because you usually find that really Don 'T because they are just living their lives. At the same time, I Don 't think that ' s just that, because it has a huge effect on people such as Don 'T have some consideration and accountability in the sense that it has on people.

Are there organizations that are close to you?

I 've been in talks with NARAS (National Academy of Sciences of Artists and Recording) to do something and work more closely with them. In the near future, I 'm looking forward to being very vocal and be instrumental in the cause and get people more involved in music education.

What is your black in music today?

It 's for redundancy, and not in the right direction. Everything is repeated over time, but it 's for the redundancy and stagnation. I always like to defy the most creative artists and bring new life to what we do, as opposed to the perpetuation of the same thing over and over time. No growth in redundancy.

So no longer identify himself as a neo-soul artist?

I 've never personally I have considered a neo-soul artist. I know people thought I was a neo soul artist. So in that sense, because people thought I was a neo-soul artist, I recognize that is something to give to people. I always considered myself as an artist who happens to be considered the soul. I 've always been inspired by all genres of music.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

I am inspired by everything. I am inspired by my personal experience, conversations I 've there were things that I 've seen it happen. I Don 't have a single place.

Musiq 's latest album "On My Radio " is due out in stores December 9.
