Shunga, literally, "Images of Spring" is the term used to describe erotic prints, books, manuscripts and paintings Japan.
As a distributor of Japanese woodblock prints and shunga, in particular, I have encountered numerous striking and evocative designs. The Shunga designs following 10 appeals to me and not in normal order. These impressions I've seen in books, at auction and in private collections.
Kappa Rape - Utamaro
This design is the first print of Uta excellent Utamaro-makura (Poem of the pillow) series published in 1788 and represents a complex scene with a Awabi (ear) Diver watch two kappa (sea monsters) assaulting a fellow under the water. This apparent rape scene is actually the woman's own Fantasie, imagining a violent sexual encounter. Also The frizzy (for the Japanese expression of high arousal) indicates that this is not a rape scene. (illustrated in Stranger Than Paradise - R. P.14 Lane, Ill.131)
Lesbian couple - Eiri
From Magnificent Models Eiri Calligraphy published in 1801 a woman moving love scene with a woman for women (the lowest) using one harigata (artificial phallus) and the holding of a celebration of a seashell that contain some type of lubricant. The viewer is beaten by the refined beauty reminiscencing erotic art of ancient Greece. (illustrated in Japanese erotic fantasies - C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel at p.147, Ill.49c)
Chinese Couple - Shigenobu
An extraordinary scene and extreme Shigenobu Willow Storm number of (late 1820) the participation of a Chinese couple. The man with the braid coiled at the top of his shaved head is the removal of fluid from the vagina of women. In his book Sex and the floating world Timon Screech comments that Keisai Eisen wrote that such fluid is used as an aphrodisiac and rub on male genitals before intercourse. Mature West - Shigenobu
From Willow Shigenobu's Storm same wonderful series of the representation of a Western partner. What is so unique and amazing in this design are imitating Western influences the shading effects of Western engraving. Western man is represented as a demon like figure. (Illustrated in Japanese erotic fantasies - C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel at p.177, Ill.65c)
Tea House - Utamaro
Probably the most acclaimed Oban (large format) print in the shunga Utamaro masterpiece Poem the ball of the series shows two lovers in a private room in a teahouse. The technique of high-quality printing, the elegant flowing lines, the composition and subtle details such as transparency of the clothes that make this one of the most coveted pictures. It whispers that the lover of men in this Abuna-e (not printed explicitly) is actually Utamaro himself. (illustrated in Japanese erotic fantasies - C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel at p.130, Ill.39)
Farmer Girl - Kiyonaga
Kiyonaga sleeved shift (Sode no Maki) series (c.1785) is another highlight of the shunga genre with its unique horizontal Hashira-e (print pillar) the size of printing. One scene involves a peasant girl and her lover caught in a moment of ecstasy. The girl with her head resting on a bundle of wood charcoal, with his toes curled in sexual bliss. Horny Maneemon - Harunobu
The board session on 'The Lusty fashion series Maneemon' (c.1770) by Harunobu represents an interesting scene in the outdoors with a young peasant girl being taken from behind by a man wearing a mask. Your parents are watching while the man claims to be a descendant of Inari, imitation god of rice. Maneemon also called "The man in miniature" or "man" which is the main protagonist of this series is a mythical character actor who feel relaxed under a tree in his straw hat. (illustrated in Japanese Erotic Prints, Shunga by Harunobu & Koryusai - Inge Klompmakers on p.65)
"69" position - Hokusai
A scene with a couple totally naked in a soixante-neuf position in a perfectly balanced composition. This impression is most famous Hokusai Oban Fukujuso series (the plant of Adonis) and is so distinctive because of the large scale of the figures portrayed. Some lovers of the Shunga call this picture '(Egg'. Illustrated in Vol.23 of The Complete Ukiyo-e shunga - R. Lane)
Dutchman - Eiri
A surprising depicition a Dutch captain sex with a beautiful courtesan. They are viewed (by the viewer) through a window a brothel of Nagasaki. Behind them, a small table in a burning incense in a bowl. This specific detail of a lot of shunga designs depiciting this item and it is said that this use of burning incense to drive away the courtesans was the smell of western customers. Dutchman's Long nails are also a striking detail. Dutch women were not allowed to live in Nagasaki, but Japanese courtesans were allowed to enter the compound. Eiri Calligraphy Designs was inspired by the poem of the pillow Utamaro which also includes a couple Netherlands. (illustrated in Vol.24 of The Complete Ukiyo-e shunga - R. Lane)
Octopus - Hokusai
Finally, but not least the most famous of all shunga designs better known as The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife young trees Hokusai very young (not Kinoe Komatsu)-series. A picture of a diver abandoned in an embrace with two Ecstasy octopus. For a while collectors and scholars believed that the scene endlessly fascinating to be a rape scene, but this has been refuted by Danielle Talerico who discovered that the public have Edo image associated with the legend of Tamatori. Also, the text in the image indicates the mutual satisfaction between all actors involved. (The can find numerous photos of this impression on the internet!)
