Egyptian Cats
It seems natural to talk about cats and Egypt in the same sentence. Certainly, both cats and share a long history of Egypt. Most experts cat believe that the ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate cats. First, they brought the cats in their barns and homes because of the ability of cats to catch mice and other creatures. Later, the ancient Egyptians - especially the rich - has begun to adopt cats as pets.
The cats became so important that the Egyptians went into mourning when the family cat died. Egypt is believed that these cats were the ancestors of the Egyptian Mau, a modern breed of cat. In fact, the paintings on the tombs and other buildings show seen, muscular cats which are very similar to modern Mau.
Cats were so revered in ancient Egypt to the point where people who hurt cats were put to death. However, many experts say, the Egyptians did not worship animals themselves. On the contrary, thought consecrated animals divine qualities and certain animals used to represent the attributes.
Egypt's cats became so important that it was believed they were direct representatives of Bastet, the cat goddess of protection, fertility and children. Bastet, also known as Bast was depicted as a woman with head of a cat or a cat just like the desert.
The other cats are goddesses Sekhmet, Bastet's sister, and Mafdet. Sekhmet was depicted as a woman with her head of a lioness. She is a darker side of the divine. Unlike the protective Bastet was associated with devastating power. Mafdet, the goddess of the Cheetah, is speedy justice trial. She was also known as the goddess panther.
Egyptian Cats in fact brings to mind images of ancient myths and magical beauty.
