How can I tell if a painting is an original or a copy?
I have left what I was told (by the original purchaser) was an original painting (by Ben Maile). But I said that is just an impression. There is considerable difference in value and have to be sure before you sell. Is there an easy way to tell the difference?
Texture is an indicator, but soft brush stroke free surface can only be the result of the style of an artist. One of the clearest ways to identify a print is to look outter edges of the image. If the edge of the painting is perfectly straight as if cut with a knife which shows that the painting hand of man was not stroking with a brush. Prints are done on canvas and paper, but the image is basically a picture as a picture, have crisp, razor edges. You can also look with a magnifying glass if you see small particles like spray paint points also shows that it is an impression. If a label distributors in the back that will give you the information too. Good luck
