Sixteen of Aikido Styles

The major styles of aikido each have their own Hombu Dojo in Japan, have an international scope and was founded by direct students of Morihei Ueshiba. Although there has been an explosion of 'independent styles "generally only the first five listed are considered more important. Iwama Ryu is a debatable sixth, although its influence is significant, was until recently part of the Aikikai.

1. Aikikai

The largest organization Aikido, and is headed by the founder's family. Many sub-organizations and the teachers themselves members of this umbrella organization, which thus covers a wide range aikido styles, training methods and technical differences. Prominent sub-national numbering organizations include Aikikai, as well as several US-based, including the United States Aikido Federation (USAF) and Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU).

2. Yoshinkan

Founded by Gozo Shioda, this branch has a reputation being the most rigidly precise. Yoshinkan Aikido students practicing basic movements as solo kata, and this style has been popular with police Japanese. The international organization associated with the Yoshinkan style of aikido is known as the Yoshinkai, and has active branches in many places in the world.

3. Yoseikan

This form was developed by Minoru Mochizuki, who was an early student of O Sensei and also of Jigoro Kano at the Kodokan. This style includes elements of aiki-budo, along with aspects of karate, judo and other arts. It is now continued by his son, Hiroo Mochizuki, the creator of Yoseikan Budo.

4. Aikido Shodokan

Often called Tomiki Aikido, after its founder, this use combat style and state-based competition in training compared to most others. People tend to compete for training instead of training to compete. Kenji Tomiki, an early student of O Sensei and also of Jigoro Kano's Judo, believed that introducing an element of competition used to refine and focus the practice since he was no longer tested in real combat. The latter view was the cause of a split with O Sensei's family, which firmly believed that there was no room for competition in Aikido training. Tomiki, said that at no time of O Sensei actually cast him out.

5. Ki Society

Ki Society, founded by former chief instructor of Hombu Dojo Dan tenth Koichi Tohei, emphasizes very soft flow techniques and has a program especially for the development of ki. It also has a special system ki-kyu ranks alongside the traditional and the system are given. This style is called Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (or Ki-Aikido).

6. Iwama Ryu

Iwama Ryu emphasizes the relationship between empty hand techniques and weapons techniques, and great emphasis is placed on training weapons. Since the death of its founder Morihiro Saito, Iwama style has been practiced by clubs within the Aikikai and an independent organization headed by Hitohiro Saito. Saito sensei time was uchideshi O Sensei, beginning in 1946 and stay with him through his death. Many consider that Saito Sensei was the student who spent most time directly studying with O Sensei. Saito sensei said he was trying to preserve and teach the art exactly as the founder of aikido taught him. Technically, Iwama-ryu is according to O Sensei taught Aikido in the early 50s, mainly in the Iwama dojo. The technical repertoire is quite large.

Iwama Ryu Aikido, directed Saito Hitohiro currently is a separate organization of the Aikikai. The Iwama Dojo Aikikai is affiliated with and is not considered a separate style. Many instructors who were influenced Morihiro Saito deeply considered Iwama style, however.

7. Taido Shin'ei

Founded by the late Noriaki Inoue, nephew of Morihei Ueshiba.

8. Yoshokai

Yoshokai aikido, begun by then hachidan Takashi Kushida-sensei of Yoshinkan Aikido is a highly centralized style of aikido, with the annual analysis techniques with explanations of the dojo transmitted home. The program contains a considerable amount of study arms, as Yoshinkan, Yoshokai includes many movement and exercise alone.

9. Aikido Tendoryu

Directed by Kenji Shimizu.

10. Shin Budo Kai

Led by Shizuo Imaizumi.

11. Kokikai

Kokikai aikido, founded by Shuji Maruyama in 1986, focuses on minimalist but effective technique. The emphasis is on positions ukemi natural and not requiring high breakfalls and deemphasis atemi and techniques that cause pain or undue discomfort to uke. As such it is considered by some as a "soft" aikido style.

12. Seidokan

Led by Rod Kobayashi. Tends to use movements that are very small and cheap. Encourages students discover an aikido that is truly their own, stressed the importance of ending the strange and focuses on working.

13. Nippon Kan

Header by Gaku Homma.

14. Tenshin

Directed by Luis Santos. The style of Steven Seagal. It is considered a "hard" style of aikido, focusing on the practical side of Aikido and the use of techniques in real world situations would be inefficient and sometimes brutal. Although there are few dojos in the United States, the number is growing.

15. Nihon Goshin Aikido

Directed by Richard Bowe. It is considered a "hard" style of aikido, the combination of techniques Karate, Judo and Daito-Ryu Aikijutsu. There are about a dozen dojos in the United States and that there was no one in Japan. Founded by Shoto Morita in Japan around 1950. Derived styles include Nihon Goshin Kopitov Aikijutsu founded by Walter in 2000.

16. Tenchin Budo Kai Aikido

Ani headed by Frank Jr. is a "hard" Aikido style, combining basic and general aspects of Tenshin Aikikai styles together. It also includes Aikijujutsu techniques making it a very practical version and street effective Aikido. Only a few qualified instructors to teach this style of Aikido. This style is an independent style with no affiliation.
